The Mammas rocking out at Blues Alley!

Once upon a time, during the fall semester of the year 2000, there were a bunch of friends attending UConn. They loved hanging out and jamming, and after some fighting with The Man, were able to rock out in the basement of Whitney Hall. There was much rejoicing. Some Band and No Stars Tonight shared this humble practice room and the stage was set for the creation of Red Hot Mammas.

I would often hang out before or after Some Band practices and jam with Newman, JD, and Jill of No Stars Tonight. The format was simple - start with a catchy guitar riff, add some funky bass and crazy lyrics, stir in a good dose of rockin' blues... and "Voila, di Red Hot Mammas... she isa done!!!"

Ben Neumon (not to be confused with Mike "Newman" Newman) provided the rockin' drums necessary for the band. When he was not available, however, the drummer's stool was filled by Newman. We often played at open mics as a four piece (Newman on drums, JD on bass, Jill on the mic, and me on guitar). By spring 2001, we had 4 original songs worked out and 2 more partially finished. Then came graduation, however and as summer came and went, it appeared that the Mammas were doomed to oblivion... remembered only by a handful of privelaged people who had attended one of the Husky Blues open mic nights.

Around Thanksgiving, I decided to try and "put the band back together" and record our songs. Ben was away with the army and so we needed a new drummer. We turned to Doug Seitz - drummer extraordinaire from Some Band. After a few rehearsals, we were ready to hit The Studio (Lloyd's Flat Rock). After a marathon 12 hour recording session, the 5 song Red Hot Mammas album was born.

Unfortunately, we could not keep the explosive energy of the Mammas together for long. Jobs and school took their toll and everyone went their own routes.
